Meet the Nail Artist: Hang Nguyen of @thehangedit

The designer behind your favorite floral manis.

Hang Nguyen’s nail selfies are an undeniable staple on the beauty-filled side of Instagram, and for good reason. A classically trained artist and painter, Nguyen’s work often bridges the gap between nail art and art art, thanks to her precise detail, crisp lines, and whimsical designs. Better known on social media as The Hang Edit, boasting over 148k followers on Instagram alone, Nguyen’s has come a long way in a short amount of time — having only joined nail tech school just over four years ago.

In the time since, the now mother of three has gained agency representation, been featured in publications such as Allure and Vogue Italia, worked with celebrities like Kate Hudson and Maddie Ziegler, and has co-created some of her very own stick on gel nail designs for ManiMe, from Not So Mellow Yellow to Golden Aura.

Below, Nguyen lets us into her world yet again — speaking with ManiMe about creating as a working mother, where she looks for inspiration, and a manicure trick you can do at-home, no tools necessary.

What was your introduction to nails and nail art?

Hang: When I was in nail tech school about 4 years ago. [I] didn’t realize nail art evolved to what it is today.

How did you develop your nail art style?

[I] learned from other artists and picked and chose the style I really resonated with and stuck to it and along the way added my own take on it.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

H: Everywhere. From fashion magazines to Pinterest, to seeing my kids play their legos and figuring out how I can do some lego nail art. Ha!

What's your best tip for an at-home manicure?

H: After a shower, push your dead skin [and] cuticles back with your own nails whilst it’s soft.

“[I] didn’t realize nail art evolved to what it is today.”

What advice would you give to an aspiring nail artist?

H: Practice, practice. And if you’re too lazy to come up with your own style at first, copy others (giving credit of course) so you can continue practicing, getting the hand eye coordination down. It’ll also help spring up ideas of your own.

What are your favorite colors or textures for nail art?

H: Always love a sheer base color to start off my “base coat nail art.”

What does a day in the life of Hang Nguyen look like?

H: Running around after kids and, if I’m lucky, quickly try to create content, especially on sunny days where I can take well lit photos — they don’t come too often in fall/winter England, so my excitement goes way up on those sunny days!

We love seeing you doing your daughters nails. Do you think she’ll follow in your footsteps and become a nail artist as well?

H: Haha! Not so sure. Xyla loves art the most so I can definitely see her do something in that field later on in life.

What's one look or design that you're most proud of?

H: I would say the floral ones, because they’re just so delicate and cute!
