ManiMe: How did you get started in the nail industry?
Chelsea: Right after high school, I started to get into nail art. As someone who had never really painted her nails before, I suddenly fell in love with having my nails be my accessory of choice. I started posting my designs on social media, and from there, I met a photographer who had me create nail designs for a photoshoot and introduced me to this world. I was in college at the time but decided to go to nail school on my days off to master my hobby. Once I graduated, I quickly found myself working full time doing nails on set, and have been doing it ever since!
ManiMe: How did you develop your nail art style?
Chelsea: I developed my nail style mostly from fashion inspiration - and also boredom! I would challenge myself to create the most detailed and precise nail art, and spend hours painting tiny flowers or perfect stripes. My designs now are a bit more simple and focused, but I still always love viewing fashion as a source of inspiration. It leads you to what’s trending for the upcoming season - whether that’s colors or patterns.
ManiMe: What are your favorite colors, textures or techniques to use in your nail art?
Chelsea: Surprisingly, my favorite color to use for nail art is nude! It’s the perfect background color to really make your design pop (like on my Beverly Hills set!). I love a matte texture, especially when combining it with a shiny top coat - it can really take a plain color manicure into some fun nail art! A technique I love doing for nail art is dry brushing. It’s when you wipe off most of the polish from the nail polish brush and swipe it across your nails, creating an abstract texture. It looks amazing on it’s own, but it’s a great technique to use to create some texture behind a nail art look!
ManiMe: Where do you typically find inspiration?
Chelsea: Fashion is my biggest source of inspiration, and now with Instagram, it’s so easy to save ideas for later! I love following my favorite designers, and fashion magazines always post the best runway looks each season. I also always use my phone to snap pictures of something I see that would be great for a design, and look at them later when I’m searching for a nail art idea.
ManiMe: What was the inspiration behind your Summer Nostalgia gel designs?
Chelsea: I am such a California girl, so I wanted my two designs to really be reflective of my favorite things about LA. I grew up near the beach and always go on my days off, so I was inspired to create a nail design that felt nostalgic to not just me - but many people! Most people have a favorite beach memory so it made sense to use that as my inspiration. Also, painting the perfect water texture on your nails is actually really difficult! I wanted to have an easy way to get the look without having any nail art experience. For Beverly Hills, I was inspired by my time when I first started working in the nail industry. Being in Los Angeles, many clients and photoshoots happen in Beverly Hills. I wanted this design to be high fashion, classic, and fun - and that’s what Beverly Hills feels like to me. This design is the perfect Summer nail art whether you’re by the pool or going out for brunch!
ManiMe: What is your favorite at-home manicure, pedicure, or nail care tip?
Chelsea: My favorite at-home manicure tip is to always cleanse the nail with alcohol before applying nail polish. It sounds like such a basic step, but 99% of the time when someone says their polish only lasts a day it’s because they’re skipping this crucial step! If you want your nails to last, I always recommend using a lint-free wipe (like a paper towel) with alcohol to cleanse the nail of any oils before applying a base coat. And really get in there, go all around the cuticle and wipe along the free edge. When you apply your ManiMe gels, there is a prep pad included - don’t skip this step!
